“Hello Ableds, Is It Vacation Yet?”

When the novel coronavirus began spreading globally in 2020, people within disability communities marked term ‘social distancing’ as oxymoronic and ignorant of those for whom isolation, quarantine, limited public life is common. For many, COVID-19 did not signal a complete upheaval their domestic lives; instead, it created opportunities to increase visibility digital spaces lament ways pandemic further erased existences. The first few months quarantine saw rise prominent advocate Imani Barbarin, known her social media @crutches_and_spice. Barbarin’s persona Black disabled fat queer woman became distinct subversion non-disabled people’s frequent laments boredom, loneliness, and/or living quarantine. Drawing upon Bailey’s alchemy theory situating how women’s online identity performances combat anti-Blackness sexism (2021), I assert Barbarin purveyor ‘disabled alchemy’ who employs “construction, constitution, production self through play performance” (Marshall & Barbour 2015, p. 2). Combining framework with studies conceptualizations performance, use Brock’s critical technocultural discourse analysis examine utilizes affordances challenge ableist notions selfhood while calling out problematic rhetoric. Critically analyzing @crutches_and_spice specifically TikTok enables nuanced grasp personas, they are often ignored, perform domesticity mitigate erasure an body politic.
